How strong is your brand?

Successful careers rarely “just” happen, rather they are the result of determined people with a strong personal brand and an effective career development plan.

Personal branding is a strategy behind the world’s most successful people.  YOUR BRAND impacts your career choices, job searches, promotions, and professional development.

If you aren’t where you want to be in your career, you may need to look hard at the strength of your brand.

Signs of a weak personal brand

  • No clear career direction – Your personal brand has a strong influence on your career direction and choices. Someone who has taken the time to discover and develop their personal brand, will have a clear understanding of their unique strengths, interests, and values. By developing their brand, they have identified the things that makes them unique. It is this uniqueness that makes them different from others, which gives them a competitive edge, because “What makes you different, makes a difference!” Once a professional has a good grasp of their self, they will then discover the career development planning is much easier. To try and make career choices, when you haven’t even seriously assessed your personal brand, is like trying to navigate a forest blindfolded.
  • You’re stuck in a dead end job – Think about it. Are you where you thought you would be in your career by this point? Are you making the kind of money you want? Do you hate waking up and heading into work? Why don’t you leave? Why stay there if you’re not happy? It’s because you have a weak brand. You lack clarity of your strengths, interests, and values. Your weak brand image is immobilizing you. You haven’t left your dead end job, because you aren’t sure where you would go, or what you would do? The building of your personal brand will build your confidence and open up your eyes to the opportunities that are just waiting for you.
  • No callbacks or interviews – Searching for a job is very challenging in today’s current job market. The economy has hit job market hard. The high unemployment rate has resulted in a high number of highly qualified candidates in the job pool, which means the hiring company has their pick of the best candidates and the competition has become fierce. How does someone with a weak brand expect to compete for a great job, if they aren’t even clear on the unique contributions they make to an employer? Great jobs, go to those who have demonstrated they have the stronger brand. You may be the better person for the job. You may have the experience, skills, and abilities to do the job, but the lack of clarity and message has weakened your value. It has also limited your opportunities.
  • No career advancement – Are you noticing people around you are being promoted? Did you get skipped over for an opportunities that you know you were the better choice? Why are less qualified or skilled coworkers given the opportunities you want? By this point, you should have a good idea what I’m going to say. Yep! In the eyes of your boss, they had the stronger brand. It could have been something so simple as you aren’t communicating your brand value effectively in your workplace, so your boss isn’t even clear of your goals or unique value. It is vital that you market yourself to your managers and coworkers. A weak brand doesn’t have a clear understanding of its value, which results in a weak message. If you are unclear of your ambitions, how can you expect your employer to know.

These are a few signs of a weak brand. There are more, but I think I’ve made my point. Please know, I’m not wanting to make you feel bad, rather I want to challenge you take charge of your career. I want to encourage you to take a good hard look at your current career status. Happy? Satisfied?
